Sin Wan Delight Rojak & Cold Drinks @ Jalan Bintang Jaya 2, 98000 Miri,Sarawak Malaysia.

Well, what should we have during afternoon tea break in Miri, Sarawak? Rather than usual noodles, we have a try on the rojak, mixed deep fried kuih and sotong kangkung.

Food that we savoured:

Cendol
Hubby has this and he is enjoying it. With everything in it. He opt for the evaporate milk instead of the coconut milk.

Ais Kacang Merah
As a lover of red beans, I ought for the pure red beans with evaporate milk.
Ais Jagung
This is just purely "corn" as my daughther just want to have corn and it mixed with evaporate milk rather than coconut milk.

Mixed assorted deep fried kuih
With this platter, we have mixed of assorted kuih such as deep fried sweet potatoes, deep fried beancurd, prawn fritters, deep fried yam and with their special sauce dressing and chillies.

Sotong Kangkung + beancurd
Normally they serve sotong kangkung only but we asked for additional beancurd. This also came with their special dressing.

Rojak
I would say different people make different type of Rojak sauce. This serve a combination of sweet and less spicy sauce with assorted fruits and cucumbers.

FoOd PaRaDiSe verdict:

Overall, we quiet enjoy the food that serve here. Out of the food served, I prefer the deep fried mixed kuih and sotong kangkung with beancurd. The sauce is a bit sweet for my liking. The price wise is a bit expensive compare to the others.

Restaurant that we reviewed:

Tauhu Tempra
Its a bit crispy of the outer bean curd but it is very soft and silky inside. And it was sprinkle with deep fried shallots, sprinkle spring onion and deep with their special soya gravy.
Rendang Chicken
Nonya Chap Choi (Vegetables)
If you are vege lover, you will love this dish very much. It consists of cabbage, carrot, assorted mushrooms, black fungus and etc.
Lady Finger with sambal
We love their lady finger very much and the sambal goes well with the lady finger.
Cincalok Egg
Love the hot plate cincalok egg very much. When you bite on the egg you can savour the cincalok inside. It is not salty at all.
Sambal winged beans with prawn and sotong
Have a nice combination of sambal winged beans with prawn and sotong. Not too spicy at all.
Assam Pedas Fish
The assam pedas fish is a bit spicy compares to other dishes. But my peers love the assam pedas gravy. The fish is very fresh and nice in texture.

Desserts that we savour:

Cendol
We wrap up our meal with the cendol. The good thing about this shop's cendol is you can add gula melaka according to your liking as you like.

Hakwer Stall @ Lebuh Presgrave, Penang

The other day, while I am chatting with Alan and we are in the conversation regarding "Tambun Pneah" and he told me that he loves the one that sold in Lebuh Presgrave. Then I recall that there are one shop that selling "Tambun Pneah". This also remind me that I have not blog about the Hokkien Mee that I have savour few months ago.

Hokkien Mee and Lor me Stall @ Lebuh Presgrave, Penang.
One of the main attraction for me to drop by here is the hokkien mee. We have been told by friends and colleagues about this stall long long time ago. But we always missed the opportunity to try it out. So during one weekend, we headed there early for dinner. As we knew there are lots of people there if we went there late. ^-^ When we arrived there, the shops are full of people already and when I passed by the hawker stall, I can smell a very nice aroma of the soup. Can't resist the aroma, each of us order a bowl each to try!

Hokkien Lor Mee
Hubby ordered this for himself. And hubby found that a bit spicy for him even though he had hokkien lor mee.

Hokkien Mee
My gal and I had this and my gal cannot stand the spiciness from the soup base. Mind you she doesn't even add any chillies on her bowl of hokkien mee. We asked her to stop taking it and she told us that she can handle it but after few spoonful, she gave us a surrender flag that she can't take it anymore. Although she find it spicy but she told me she enjoyed it.
As for me, the hokkien mee soup base is very thick and have the fragrant aroma. One thing about this hokkien mee, is the pork spare ribs. It tastes nice. But I prefer it to be more tender. Perhaps I went there too early. ^-^

Wantan Mee
Since my gal surrender her bowl of hokkien mee, she request for a plate of wantan mee. After she having it and I was eager to know, what she think about the wantan mee. Guess what her respond to me? Err..... not bad.... but not the best.
"OMG now she started to give comments some more. lol"
Cendol
I saw everyone is ordering cendol. So I asked hubby to order one for me to try. My gal and I are aiming for the ice-cream. ^-^ As this is one of the good thing to have after having spicy foods. So we treat that is our desserts for the day. And we leave Lebuh Presgrave with a very "FULL" tummy.

Invited Review - Hot Wok Nonya & Local Cuisine @ Burmah Road, Penang

There are several Nonya restaurants around in Penang. And today I am going to blog about "Hot Wok Nonya & Local Cuisine". I think most of you should have known this restaurant as it was located at Tanjung Tokong and Gurney Plaza before but now has move to a two adjoining double storey pre-war houses along Burmah Road, Penang.
Some overseas reader might not understand what is Peranakan or Baba- Nonya(峇峇娘惹). You can click here for more information. And also here for more write up. If you are in Penang, may be you would like to visit Pinang Peranakan Mansion @ Church Street, Penang to learn more about Peranakan or Baba - Nyonya.
If you run out of time and would like to see some of the baba-nyonya photos and others, you can always drop by Hot Wok Nyonya & Local Cuisine to savour some of the foods and look around at their collections.
Hot Wok Main Entrance
Some of the interiors.......
More interiors photos and HOT WOK has been awarded as the Best Restaurant by Malaysian Tatler Magazine in 1998 and 2004. Furthermore, it was featured in TVB Hong Kong food channel in 2007. You can see photo of Ella Kung (Hong Kong actress), Hugo Man (well knowned Chef from Hong Kong) and Kelyvn Yeoh (Director and Chef of HOT WOK) taken on 9 December 2008.

Some photos..... Hot Wok menu........
After some introduction to the interiors, let come back to the foods.......
Loh Bak
This is our first dish being served for the night. There are several different types of loh bak around in Malaysia as the ingredients use are differ from one to another. And the way where they wrap the loh bak is also another important thing. Some tend to wrap it to loosely while I like the firm type. And the Loh Bak that being serves in Hot Wok suites my taste buds. And find that it tastes very delicious.
Choon Pheah
This is another appetizer that we savour for the night. Some might wonder what is "Choon Pheah"? Well, it is basically spring rolls. If you want something juicy and crispy. This would be your choice.
Hokkien Prawn Mee
When you are around Hot Wok, you will definitely smell this fragrant hokkien prawn mee aroma. Once I was around that area, I can smell the aroma........ And this time round, I have the chance to savour it. ^-^ Well..... I think my gal will love this since it is not spicy at all. Will bring her there one day and try this. While I am doing this blog, she keeps asking me whether this hokkien mee is spicy or not. See..... she is so eager to try. ^-^
Kiam Chai Ark
While we were busy capturing the photos, some of us are eyeing on this soup. As the smell is unbeatable. If you like something that is not too sour you will certainly love this dish. By the way Kiam Chai Ark is Salted Vegetables Duck Soup. For me, I would wish that a bit more sourness will make the soup more perfect for my taste buds. However, I still enjoy this soup too.
Curry Kapitam Chicken and Tau Eu Bak
These two are my all time favourites. ^-^ I personally think that the curry kapitam chicken is not spicy. But it has many varieties of herbs in the curry. The chicken is very tender and succulent. The tau eu bak and the eggs are equally taste nice. Especially the hard boiled egg white. It is very firm. It's just like the way my MIL cook.
Curry Tumis Fish and Pork Cincalok
If you don't like lemak type of curry, then you can opt for curry tumis fish as this curry tumis is more towards the sweet, sour and spicy taste. The curry is served in a claypot which would help to sustain the heat of the curry tumis fish.
Next is the Pork Cincalok. Cincalok? what is that? Some might wonder. Well, it is one of the products of Malaysia. It is basically fermented tiny small shrimps. More details can be obtained from here. The pork is very tender and a bit salty. It is best to go with some white rice.
Or Kuih
Which is also known as steamed yam cake. It is served with sweet chillies, dried shallots, sliced chillies and spring onions. If you love the soft and tender type of yam cake, then this would be your choice.
Jiu Hoo Char and Assam Prawn
I always find that this dish is very hard to prepare since you have to grate all the ingredients into very thinly slice. It is very time consuming. (As I am a very lazy mummy) Many ingredients involve here such as turnips, dried squids, carrots, mushrooms....... It is nice to wrap it with vegetables. It is also nice to go with some rice too.
Next..... the assam prawn....assam means tamarind. So it is basically prawn cooked with tamarind and soya sauce. Although this sound easy but in order to get the right tastes, it is not easily done.
Desserts
What else should we have to wrap up the review? Off course.... the desserts. We are so fortunate to taste not only one dessert but 6 desserts. The desserts that we try are Ice Kacang, Sago Gula Melaka Sago Honeydew, Cendol, Mango Cendol and Sago Nangka. So I am sure that there are some desserts that suit you.
