Hopoh Canteen @ Jalan Jee Foh Utama (Wisma Hopoh Miri Lot 1018)98000Miri, Sarawak Malaysia.

We have a short trip to Miri, Sarawak to attend an important function of the family members. Therefore, we have a chance to savour some foods in Miri.
One of the food stops is the famous old time favourite assorted "chai kuih" and Koay chap at Wisma Hopoh. We were told to get there early in the morning in order to savour this. As if you came late, the "chai kuih" might already sold off especially during weekend.

Food that we savour:

Deep fried beancurd
I am actually love the deep fried beancurd offer in most of the places in Sarawak. Some of the deep fried beancurd offer here is stuffed with pork and some with the added salted fish. It will make the beancurd more flavourable.
Assorted Chai Kuih

There are different types of chai kuih that we savoured. If you see from the first photo of the assorted chai kuih, you will notice two of it is wrap in rectangular shapes. I was told that it was wrap with  "Koay Tiaw". Just that this is in big sheet compare to the one one we had for char Koay tiaw. But still I prefer the normal chai kuih but find that the skin of the chai kuih is not thin enough compare to those my aunt mother in law make. But that will just kept in my memory.
The fillings of all the chai kuih are quite generous and taste vice is still nice.

Kolo Mee
My girl is having the kolo mee which she reckon that it is a bit too soft for her liking.

Koay Chap
I had the Koay chap. Soup base is tasty and lots of ingredients in the Koay chap. The Koay is a bit thinner compare to those serve in Penang.

FoOd PaRaDiSe verdict:

Overall, it's a place that you can try several things in one roof. Lucky that we woke ourselves up early to give this place a try.

Kedai Kopi New Cathay @ Pulau Tikus, Penang

I am sure this is the place where it is not a stranger to anybody in Penang. As this coffee shop serves nice and varieties foods. We tend to have difficulty to get a seat no matter whether you go during weekdays or weekend. It is usually full house. Normally we will go there during breakfast in the weekend but during one weekday whereby hubby taking day off, we decide to go there and check out whether there are as many patrons as always.
So one weekday, we arrived Kedai Kopi New Cathay around 8.10am and we still mange to get table for two. So hubby went around and order the foods and mind you, he is so hungry that day and he order a lot. hahahhahaa......
Mee Jawa
Hubby opts for the stir fry version of mee jawa. And we found out that the way the stall owner add in the egg into the mee jawa is something different. Every piece of the noodles is cover with egg. Hubby comments that the noodles are not bad.

Chai Koay
Hubby cannot wait any longer and bought some chai kuih and kuih from the kuih stall. The chai koay being serves there are not too bad. The skin and fillings of the chai koay are ok.
Kuih
I am not really a fans of nyonya kuih. But I do take it from time to time. I am not sure when, I started to dislike the kuih that coat with coconut. But hubby insist me to try and told me that it tastes nice. As an adventure person, I will always try my best to try. Overall, not too bad.

Hokkien Mee
Both of us share this hokkien mee. And this bowl of hokkien mee is quite nice. Have a nice aroma.

Wantan Mee
This is one of my gal favourites. I remember when she last visited this cafe, she loves it so much. Hubby loves the springy textures of the wantan mee and he told me that it is worth the waiting time. lol

Koay Chap
This is actually my order of koay chap. I like to try different stall of koay chap. Each stall has it own aroma and flavour. And the textures of the koay chap varies too. Overall, I found that the koay chap here are not bad. If you don't like the coriander, then you have to ask the stall owner not to put as it will immersed into the koay chap soup base.
My previous post about the pancake can be view here.

Mutiara Selera @ Island Glades, Penang

This place is not a stranger place for most people in Penang. As it is one of the "Popular" food stalls in Island Glades. Occasionally, we will drop by this place for dinner if we are craving for some hawker foods in this area.
During one outing with my sister and mother. My sister reckon that she would like to go there for some hawker foods. As she wants more varieties. So we head on to Mutiara Selera.
Entrance to Mutiara Selera which is next to Sports Toto Shop
Since I took the photo of the western food corner on a on going car, I better blog about the western foods offer from Barbecue Corner Cheah's Delights first. In this western food corner, there are a lots of choices but usually we will order mix grilled
Mix Grilled
Few years back, I could remember that all the foods in this mix grilled are big in sized but it seems like the portion getting smaller and smaller each time we order this. This is all due to the price increasing ah......... My sister enjoyed her mixed grilled and share some with us too!
Wantan Mee
My mum is having wantan mee for the night. And she told me that she prefers some other place wantan mee than this. As she comments that the noodles textures is kinda soft towards her liking.
Fried Rice
My gal is a "rice" person. Most of the time she will go for rice during dinner. And she wants some fried rice. We never tried the fried rice before. But I can see that my gal is enjoying her fried rice. As she finished all of them. ^-^
Chicken Satay
Hubby went and order some chicken satay. Occasionally when we visited this shop, we will order some chicken satay while waiting for other order to come. The Chicken Satay is not bad. Very tender.
Lor Mee
Hubby decided to have lor mee for the night. He comments that the lor me is ok.
Char Koay Teow
I had CKT for the night. I am enjoying my plate of CKT. The CKT in this food court is nice.
Chai Kuih and Ku Chai Kuih
Ku Chai Kuih
Chai Kuih
Oh Kuih
All of the above kuih are from the same corner where auntie is selling all sort of kuihs. Be prepare to wait for your turn as many people came here and patronise the kuih stall. For me, the kuih is just so-so. ^-^

Road Side Hakwer Stall in front of Honda @ Jalan Sungai Pinang, Penang

We have been wanted to patronise the hawker stall in front of Honda at Sungai Pinang for a long time. And finally we make our way there without my gal as she is schooling. We learned from our friends that there are always pack with people most of the time. So we choose to go during weekday. But the verdict is still full of people. But we managed to get a seat. ^-^
The only things in my mind is to try the mee sua as it is very popular in this place. So the first things hubby went to order is
Duck Drumstick Mee Sua
When the Mee Sua arrived, both hubby and I both reckon that the mee sua must be very soft judge by the look. As we don't really enjoy the noodles textures being over cooked. So as usual, captured some photo of the foods and hubby starts to dig in. And he told me that the mee sua textures is ok.
This bowl of duck drumstick mee sua is mine as hubby had the pork spare ribs and stomach mee sua. My bowl of mee sua tastes nice and the textures of the mee sua suits my taste buds. Once we parked our car nearby the stall, we already smell the herbal aroma came from this stall. And the soup base are full of herbal aroma and the duck drumstick is very tender.
The herbal uses for the soup base such as dang gui, wolfberries, dried mandarin peel and....... (p/s note: It has a very strong herbal aroma!!!!)

Pork Spare Ribs and Stomach Mee Sua
This is hubby ordered. And hubby loves it very much. But the spare ribs is not very tender compares to the duck drumstick. ^-^ At first hubby thought that the soup base for both mee sua are the same. After I tried hubby soup base, I told hubby that I prefer mine. Then hubby tastes some of the duck drumstick and he agrees with me. Hooray! I make another better choice than him again!!!! lol
We were sitting in front of this moving around motor bike selling chai koay and or koay. And hubby saw the wording " A TRY WILL CONVINCE YOU". Ah..... he was thinking why not give it a try! So he ordered some chai koay and "oh" kuih from the uncle as following:
Chai Koay and "oh" kuih
2 different chai koay
Look at the skin of the chai koay. It looks nice right? Well, both the chai koay taste nice.
"Oh Kuih" (Yam)
I am very particular with "oh kuih" as most of the place you get you cannot get the textured of the yam. And nowadays, most of the people nicely blend it. But I still prefer my "oh kuih" have some cube yam in there. And this stall "oh kuih" have few yam cube in there. The tastes vice is not bad.
Nasi Lemak
After hubby finished his breakfast, he is waiting for me as I still take my own sweet time to enjoy my breakfast. He looked around and he spotted the nasi lemak stall and he told me he went there and check it out. When he returned, he came back with a plate of nasi lemak. lol
But he make a good move though. As if he did not check it out this stall, we will not savour this nice aroma and tasty nasi lemak. The sambal uses were so tasty and the rice has a great aroma that hubby thought of "take away" for our gal. But after much discussion, we did not bought her that as we worried by the time she come home from school, the nasi lemak might be spoilt.
After school, hubby told her that we went to have a nice aroma and did not take away for her as we scare that it spoilt and she kept complaining that we always go to have some nice foods while she is busy schooling. lol We promised her to bring her there to try one day.

Food hunt at Sungai Bakap, Jawi

Few weeks ago, we followed my MIL to Sg. Bakap. I always heard lots about the foods in Sg. Bakap from my hubby, MIL and their family members. They told me about 40-50 years ago, my hubby's grandpa already visited the following shops for foods. They told me numerous times about their ark ka pau. They told me that it has a very nice aroma and it is prepared in a traditional way. OMG they kept telling me from time to time. And when I taste some ark ka pau in Penang, my hubby will remind me that the ark ka pau is different from the one in Sg. Bakap. Oh gosh....... I cannot stand it any more with their description, so I asked my MIL to bring us to savour the foods. And since she wants to do some praying in the nearby area, she brought us there.
But it is quite far from Penang....... lol but the trips is memorable and satisfied our taste bud. lol
First, I would like to introduce you :

Soon Lee Restaurant
Location: 34, MK 12, Main Road, Sg. Bakap, 14200 Sungai Jawi, Seberang Perai Selatan.
Tel: 04 -5824063
Business Hour: 7am - 2pm (Close on alternate Monday, please call before you go)
This shops famous for their Chai kuih, dim sum and chu char. My MIL and hubby's  aunt told me about their chai kuih, so we went there to try it out. Hubby and my gal went there first as we went to collect the ark ka pau which is opposite to this restaurant. This is also hubby 1st visit to this restaurant. When they sat down, immediately the shop owner brought 5 plates of Mang Kwang Chai Kuih and 5 plates of Ku Chai Kuih out and put on the tables. Hubby was surprised. lol
Then hubby told the shop owner that they are only 2 persons for the time being and cannot finished all 10 plates of chai kuih. So hubby only ordered 4 plates (2 Mang Kwang Chai Kuih and 2 of Ku Chai Kuih) while waiting for us.

Mang Kwang Chai Kuih
When we saw the outlook of the chai kuih, we asked my MIL why the chai kuih skin look terrible. My MIL told us it is their specialties. lol The Mang Kwang Chai Kuih is just so-so for our liking.

Ku Chai Kuih
We preferred their Ku Chai Kuih then the Man Kwang Chai Kuih. But it is a bit salty for us too. lol
Then the owner asked whether we would like to order chu char and since it is around lunch time, we decided to have lunch there and the shop owner recommended their specialties to us. So we ordered:
Stir fry tang hoon
When the tang hoon being served, it does not look appealing to me. lol But after we savour it.......... you will start to loves it. It is indeed a very nice stir fry tang hoon and many ingredients in there too.
Next came the......
Fish Soup
Everybody loves the soup. It is very nice. The fish is very fresh and the soup tastes sour. Very yummy! lol
*********************************************************************
The following shops is just located directly opposite to Soon Lee Restaurant. This is the main purpose of visiting Sg. Bakap. lol
Kedai Makanan Wah Seng
Please make sure that you go to the right shop as they got two Wah Seng in that area. Just make sure that this Wah Seng is directly opposite to Soon Lee Restaurant.
All the delicious foods.......
The owner of Kedai Makanan Wah Seng
The sons of the owner of Kedai Makanan Wah Seng
Another way to make sure you are in the right stores is to remember their faces. They are very friendly people. lol
We take away everything from Wah Seng as we are dining @ Soon Lee Restaurant. My MIL call and ordered ark ka pau and roast duck 2 days b4 hand as they only do limited ark ka pau per day. (unless you pre-order it)
Ark Ka Pau

The ark ka pau is wrap with duck giblet and liver. However in Penang, it is wrap with many other ingredients. It has a very great aroma. So we cannot stand the aroma while we were in Soon Lee Restaurant. We started eating there. lol We were told by my MIL that they still do it in traditional way while others do that in modern way now. lol

Roast Duck
This is my "HIGHLY RECOMMEND" dish for this food hunt trip. I never taste any better roast duck than this b4. I fall in love with this roast duck after my first bite. My MIL told me that their roast duck is very nice as she just savour that when she attend a wedding @ Bagan Serai few weeks ago. And she is RIGHT. The roast duck skin is very crispy and the duck meat is very tender, juicy and succulent. My MIL bought us 1 whole duck and we gave away some to our neighbour to try it out. And they comments that the duck is very juicy and tender. lol They love it very much too.
Since we cannot finished it in one day, I reheat it in my oven and it tastes equally delicious. While doing this blog post...... it makes me drolling........ lol
While we were in the shop, I went to the food counter to see what other foods they sold. And I saw they sold
BBQ Pork (Char Siew)
I asked the son of the owner, what is this and I was told that it is char siew. lol Char Siew???? My eye went "BIG". As usually we see the char siew in red colour. And they told me that they marinate with their home made soya sauce. So I order some to try and it tastes not bad.

Duck Giblet
Sausages
I was offered by the owner to try a piece of sausage that make by them. And it tastes very nice. So I order some and was told that there are only few left. So I "Sapu" everything. lol As the owner told me that I will not regret it.
And lucky I "sapu" everything as my gal and hubby love it very much. lol
We were invited to dine in there but since hubby and my gal already start eating @ Soon Lee , we reject their offer. lol The owner told us to come back next time and he will belanja us. lol
