Ah Soon Durian Orchard at Balik Pulau, Penang

Yesterday, I visited durian orchard at Balik Pulau. I only get to know this place when my SIL mentioned it to us. Since my SIL just came back from overseas, we decided to go for durian feast with her friends and families.
Since the durian in this orchard is towards the end, so we only get to savour limited types of durian. We had

LIPAN (蜈蚣)
LIPAN flesh is slightly yellow. And it tastes sweet and creamy. The seeds are rather smaller as the LIPAN we had is a bit smaller compares to the usual LIPAN durian as it's towards the end of season for this orchard.

LIM FENG JIAO
Well, this is quite a famous durian in the past. But frankly speaking this is the first time I had LIM FENG JIAO durain. LIM FENG JIAO durian is usually big in size. And the taste is sweet and creamy and towards the ends it has a little hint of bitterness.

KUNG PO
The KUNG PO that we had, the flesh looks slightly orange. And the tastes were sweet and creamy.

HOR LOR (葫芦)
The HOR LOR that we had were not really good. As it is towards the end of seasons now and the flesh were slightly hard. I kinda like HOR LOR among the durians as it taste sweet and towards the end it has a hint of bitterness.

D604
This is one of the famous durians few years back. From the photos itself, you can see that the flesh looks creamy. It tastes sweet.

CHEH PUI (青皮)
It tastes sweet from the beginning and towards the end, it turns a bit bitterness. The seed is very very small.

ANG JIN
Just before we finished durians. Some one come back from the orchard with some durians. And they were asking us if we want to try ANG JIN. And since we never tried before, everyone agreed to tried it out. The durian tastes were hard to described. It has a kind of aroma that I don't know how to describe. It's towards the sweet side and the flesh looks deep orange in color.

CEMPEDAK
Since my SIL were cempedak fans. And we were asking whether it's the cempedak seasons right now. And we were told that now is not a cempedak season yet. But the owner had one cempedak. And he treated us the cempedak. It's very generous of him. And my SIL took back the rest to deep fried.
You can contact John - 0134359293 for arrangement and booking for durians. Please call him for the more detail of their location. Overall, the charges of durian is around RM10/kg.

Balik Pulau Poh Beng Estate @ Jalan Tengah, Penang

It's not only world cup started but the "Durian Feast" is also in the season at the moment. Hubby been nagging me to have some durians in the pass few weeks. Then last week, I gave in and we have a dinner feast for our dinner. We cannot have anything else after the durian.
This year, we decided to eat in the stall rather than bringing home and eat. As hubby always the one who had to open the durian. This year he wanna enjoy and need some one to do the jobs for him.
So hubby chose to have our durian feast @
Balik Pulang Poh Beng Estate (Stall)
Their actual estate is in 17 - A, Sungai Pinang 11010 Balik Pulau, Penang.
But we went to the stall that is situated in Jalan Tengah. (Slightly opposite to the Bomba)
Tel: 04 - 8661385
They have: Hor Lor (DR 56), Kun Boh Ang Bak (DR22), Ang Hair (DR81), DR604, D-Pan, Xiao Hong and............
We started by having something sweet. Since my gal wanna some durians as well. Actually we should start the bitter part first rather than the sweet. lol But anyway we still enjoy the feast. ^-^
Hubby wanna try "Xiao Hong" since we never try that before, so the friendly uncle help us to choose one and open up for us. Auntie on that stall was surprised to see my gal eating the durians. lol
"Xiao Hong"
It is towards sweet taste of flavour and it is not very rich and creamy compares to "Kung Boh". At first glance, I thought that the flesh of durian would be very hard. But surprisingly it is more towards medium to soft textures.
"Kung Boh"
It is another sweet taste flavour. This is more creamier. And we prefer this one than "Xiao Hong". The durian flesh are more softer. Hubby and I were slurp slurp slurping away with the durian. Then hubby decided that we go for some bitter durian. Since my gal stopped after a few durians.
And since she stopped and wash her hands, the following two durians photos was taken by her since my hands are coated with durians. She was so helpful and help me to take the photos of the durians. So I can enjoy myself further. lol
"Wu Kong"
It is hard to get this type of durians. You can get this only during the beginning of the durian seasons. The uncle told us that it will finished by last weekend. I guessed we were lucky to give it a try! This durian have less flesh than the other durians that we tried. And it is very smooth textures. It is towards bitter taste flavour.
"D11"
Been hearing about this very long time ago. It's very popular in the past. But never try it out. We are lucky to have the friendly uncle who entertain to us. He will recommend us different types of durians for us to try. And the last durian that we try were D11. And this turns out to have many seeds on it. So after this we have to surrender our self. lol
This durian is very dry. Not creamy. And it has the bitter taste flavour. But not as bitter as the bitter gourd. lol
If you like the above flavours of durian, you can drop by the stall and try it out. Our durian feast cost is RM52. I can imagine that hubby will go for more durians in this durian seasons hunting for more flavours. lol
Before I ended this post, I would like to wish every one of you "Happy Duan Wu Festival/ 端午节
快 乐". And also happy 95th birthday to my hubby grandma.

Ah Joo Durian @ , Teluk Kumbar, Penang

Durian Durian Durian.......... every where you go around Penang, you will easily spot the durian stall. Some are managed by chinese and some are Malay. If you are durian lover, you will love it. But some of my friends who are not the durian fans, hate it very much during the durian season. ^-^ But they have to bear the long season mainly from May to August.
Ok now back to the place that I am going to introduce are located in Teluk Kumbar. When Steven told me about Teluk Kumbar, my mind only flashes with seafood. Teluk Kumbar Seafood and Hai Boey Seafood. ^-^ I really cannot imagine that we are having Tropical Foods for our dinner.
Direction to Ah Joo Durian Stall: Using Jalan Bayan Lepas to Teluk Kumbar and passed by a mosque shown as the photos below and look out for FOREVER STAR ELECTRICAL & HAPPY PLUMBER TRADING on your right. Then Ah Joo durian stall is just next to it. You can asked around the local to get direction if you are lost, the local know them well as AH Joo durian have been operating for about 17 years.

Ah Joo Durian Stall
Rambutan
Before the durian talk, first let talk about rambutan. Ah Joo Durian stall also sell rambutan. All the rambutan sold here are from Balik Pulau. When we arrived there, we saw lots of rambutan at the back of the car boot. And I can't resist to take some photos of it. And we get to tasted the rambutan too. And the rambutan tasted very juicy.
Rambutan are sold at the price of RM5 for 3kg and RM2 for 1kg.

Langsat, Mangosteen and Cempedak
They also sold other local fruits such as langsat, mangosteen and cempedak. My dad loves langsat so much. Whenever he saw langsat, he always buy it. I tried one of the langsat and it tastes great. It cost RM2 per kg.
Next is Mangosteen, I am not the fans of mangosteen but you can get 2 kg for RM5 and 1kg for RM3. They also sell cempedak. That's my SIL favorites. Too bad that she cannot have it this year since she is overseas. Every year she will buy cempedak and deep fried it. So I always have free juicy deep fried cempedak to eat during this season. Cempedak (red meat) cost RM3 for 1kg.

Many types of durian sold in this stall. And above are the photos of the owner ~ Ah Joo. The boss is a very friendly person, just tell him what kind of durian you after, he will recommend you what to have.
During the visit, we had several types of durian. Please refer to the following for more details:

Ooi Kiau Ong/ Kunyit Kunning 黄姜(Below RM 10)
This type of durian tested very creamy, bitter and smooth. Furthermore, this is the cheapest durian we have tested among the rest. Although the durian is cheap but kunyit kunning has it own attraction.

KIM POH ~ Below RM15
After the first bites, every one have the feeling like we are having some ice-cream except It is not being served in cold. And the textures of this durian is very creamy and soft.
Hor Lor 葫芦 ( Below RM 15) and Ang Hae/ Udang Merah/ Otak Udang 红虾 (RM10 - RM30)
Hor lor.... ah...... it tested sweet in the outer layer but when you eat towards the end, it tested a bit bitter. Don't get me wrong with the bitterness. It is not like the bitter gourd. ^-^ It is just a way to describe it. For me hor lor get the top bitterness among other durians that we tested.
As for Ang Hae, it tested mostly sweet and only a little hint of bitterness towards the end. And the seed is very small in size. It has a very creamy and silky textures. I still can recall when Cariso having Ang Hae, she was so excited and kept pointing at the durian. She falls in loves with it after the first bite. ^-^ I think most of us like it too with the smooth and silky textures but be warn it is very rich. The Ang Hae that we had cost RM16.
We were told that we cannot consume the Ang Hae straight away after it drop from the tree as we need to wait for few hours. So don't consume Ang Hae straight away if you have the chance to go to durian orchard. ^-^
Chae Pui 青皮(RM 8 -RM20) and Tatt Kar Chui (Below RM10) 塞屁股
Chae Pui is translated from "Hokkien". Normally, if you saw the durian flesh inside appear as green-based for Chae Pui, it usually tastes bitter. And it tested sweet from the beginning and towards the end, it turns a bit bitternes. The seed is very very small. The one that we had cost around RM8.
As for the tatt kar chui, err..... you must be wondering what is that? Well, that's our reaction too. I think this is the name created by the owner and was told that it is a new species. The taste is very sweet. If you love sweet durian, this will suit you.
All the durians sold from Ah Joo durian stall is from Gertak Sanggul, Penang.
Apart from what we had, they also offerred other species such as Kor Teh, Kucing Tidur, Capri, Susu, D15, D2, COB, Ganja and Qi Xian Nyu.
The business hours are from 10am -12 pm (open daily). You can contact Ah Joo @ 017-4222248 and Kelly @ 012-4531812 (For delivery).
If you find Teluk Kumbar is so far for you, you can stop by their other branch @ Sg Nibong from 4pm - 10pm (nearby the kopitiam selling bak kut teh).
Are you tempted with all the durian that we had? If so, you might gather some friends and families to have their durian buffet fest available @ RM25 per adult and RM15 per child.
The next question is what will you be having during the durian fest? Well, you will be having all branded (include hor lor, ang hae) durian. If you are interested, please contact them for booking and please note that you must gather at least 5-10 persons.
Another good news for you to share, that is they provide delivery service too. ^-^ Not fast food delivery, but durian delivery. They only deliver within penang island (not including Seberang Prai) and the minimum order is 10 biji.
